Pop Quiz: How are you spending your summer?

Hey everyone!

The spring term is over for us here in the Great White North, as it will be soon for folks south of the border and elsewhere in the world. I have to admit one of the things that originally drew me to academia was the schedule: unstructured (if not actually free) time for a full third of the year, to do with (almost) as I please. Of course, I will be working–researching, conferencing, travelling, writing–but the feeling of not having to be somewhere every day really can’t be beat.

So I ask–how are you planning on spending your summer? If you are not on the academic schedule, what do you think you would do with all that time every year? Do you think the academic schedule is still necessary now that most people don’t need to spend summer on the farm?

  1. I’m a high school teacher, and an occasional teacher at this point rather than full-time, but my July is going to be teaching at the private school I worked at before I joined my school board, and then traveling to Italy for a few weeks in August. Very excited!
