Pop Quiz: Gays Please Leave Children Alone

I woke up to this news article this morning, and could not believe the comments of Russian President Vladimir Putin. When asked about the safety of gay fans and athletes who will be attending the Sochi Olympics, Putin had this to say:

One can feel calm and at ease. Just leave kids alone, please.

What do gay people have to do with children, besides the fact that they were once children? Would he say the same thing about Catholic priests attending the games? Doubtful.

This policy of keeping gay men and women away from children is disgusting, for it seeks to compare homosexuals with pedophiles, which is factually wrong. How can people with alternative sexual orientations feel safe in a country that does not want them near children. This is sad.

Our school openly welcomes gay students to its classrooms, clubs, and sports teams. I don’t think it would be possible to work in an environment that did otherwise. While my school certainly has many shortcomings, I am very happy about this progressive stance.

Yet, I know many schools, while not having a policy, do not not welcome students who are not heterosexual.

My question to all you SODers, how does your school handle alternative sexuality in students and faculty?

Faculty are still very quiet in my district, but students are given much more freedom. Recently a student asked to speak to me privately and I was surprised when they asked to be called by a name of the opposite gender. Not surprised that they asked, but more surprised by how much of a non-issue it was for me and for most students. It is summed up by what a guidance counselor said about it. “They are not the only one, but they are the only one who is brave enough to come out.”
