Pop Quiz: Indulgence

For me summer is a time for vacations and to indulge myself.  At different times in my life different things have been the height of indulgence.  A week vacation away from everything, a well-made meal, and a trip to the masseuse have all been on the list, but recently I have found the thing that has expanded my list and bypassed all of those things.  What is this thing that is more indulgent than a 100 lb box of chocolate and a gold plated diamond studded cell phone combined?

You will never guess.

Hiring a person to clean my house

Yup, that’s it.  No longer is my Saturday filled with bathroom washing, dusting and floor vacuuming.  I now, once every two weeks, come home to a clean house.  This is one of the most wonderful feelings I have experienced in my life.  There are no dog hair tumble weeds, I cannot write my name in the dust on my TV and the bathroom sparkles, and on top of all this it is repeating.  It is not just a one-time thing before a party or as a special treat this is ongoing, and it is lovely. The only thing that I could think of that is more indulgent is coming home to a clean house and … dinner.

It is interesting to me how my perception of indulgence has changed over time.  When I was in my 20’s I would never have appreciated a person cleaning my house.  The height of indulgence was a nice warm bath, a good book and a glass of wine.  Now as I approach 40 I still enjoy the bath, the book and the booze, but a clean house now that is bliss.

So what about you School of doubters what was the height of bliss when you were younger and what is it now?

  1. 20’s: Laying out at night on a stony ridge in the Rocky Mountains. Wrapped up in warm sleeping bag, with great dope and a huge bag of trail mix. Watching the stars wheel overhead and waking with the dawn.

Now: Ordering delivery from a fine local restaurant. Watching anything that has Larry David in it. Getting done with the daily chores and into the soft bed by 11. Hoping the dog lets me sleep past dawn!

  2. While a clean house would be nice, I would never want that, my dirt, I should clean it. Also if I had that kind of money, I’d probably consider I’m not using my time very well.

I’d rather go to the theatre/cinema once or twice a week than have another person clean my house.
