Pop Quiz: Whiteboard vs. Chalkboard
The other day I was talking with my father-in-law who helps out at their church’s school. He was telling me about how they were cleaning some stuff out to get things ready for the new school year. As he was telling me this he also managed to describe how they cut up some whiteboards that they decided were to be thrown out. I had to breathe for a minute before speaking. I would have carried one of those suckers on my back away from the school miles down the road had I known they didn’t want them. Whiteboards are expensive and I do love them.
At the various schools I teach at only a couple have whiteboards. Initially, I was not a whiteboard person. I didn’t like the smell of the markers, the boards always seemed to have some ghostly glow of the last color you used, and I would end up with ink either on me or my clothing. Yuck. However, over the years I have found pens that do not smell and the whiteboards were replaced with newer ones that are easier to clean. So I really started to like them to the point of wanting one in my home.
I do use chalkboards as well. In those classrooms I have really started to get sick of being covered in chalk dust by the end of class. I hate it on my hands to the point I am constantly rinsing my hands in the sink when I can. Yes, I have used those chalk holders but a lot of them do not permit me to use the chalk the way I normally do so I feel awkward with them. The quality of the chalkboards are not great that I use. Some are not actual blackboards but some weird synthetic material that does not let the chalk stand out and you have to press really hard.
Which do you prefer? Whiteboard or Chalkboard? Or neither?

Definitely chalk. But then I guess I don’t have enough experience to call the shots.
I used to really love chalk. Just what fits at the moment I suppose.
I am a huge white board fan. Not only do my hands stay clean, but I use the classroom projector directly on it making myself a not-so-smart-board.
